SOCRATES PROGRAMME
Socrates once said ‘the unexamined life is not worth living’ and our bespoke programme, coined in the great philosopher’s name, intends to foster that mentality.
Alongside a series of exciting lectures on a broad variety of topics ranging from the environment, to the arts and technology, Socrates Scholars also have the opportunity to meet and engage with a variety of leading experts to be inspired for their final piece of work.
Scholars have complete freedom to create a final piece in whatever form they choose, whether a short film, play, article, model, display, essay or even a robot. The most important premise for all submissions is that they reflect the interests of the pupil and demonstrate a development of an initial idea and regular reflection throughout the process. They will also submit a written rationale of under 2000 words.
Through the Socrates Programme, pupils gain the confidence, support and recognition to think for themselves and plan their own independent research, while receiving regular guidance from their own individual mentor and inspiration from guest speakers. The Socrates Programme gives every pupil the opportunity for stretch and challenge beyond their timetabled lessons.
It is compulsory for all scholars and optional for pupils in Years 7-9.
The key aims of the programme include:

Families join us for a celebration evening each summer, to celebrate the culmination of each girl’s project. All Socrates Scholars display their final pieces and are treated to a keynote speech by an enthusiastic lifelong learner such as our Socrates Patron, Author and Lecturer, Christopher Lloyd.
Every year we are amazed by the quality of what the girls produce, as well as the fascinating range of topics they choose, from Interior Design Through the Decades, The World of Sharks, and Why Sleep is Important for Adolescents. We learn as much as they do!
