#700STEMChallenge

Masterminded by one of our Year 12 pupils in 2018, the national #700STEMChallenge writing competition has gone from strength to strength.

A unique STEM writing competition

We are passionate about supporting our pupils, regardless of their interests, and helping them achieve their ambitions. In 2018, a sixth-form student proposed a STEM writing competition for both GDST and local London schools, combining creative writing with STEM topics. Since then, we have proudly hosted the event annually, with expert judges selecting our finalists each year.

Each spring, the competition is eagerly anticipated by STEM enthusiasts from both GDST and schools across London. Pupils condense their knowledge of a specific science, technology, engineering, or math topic into just 700 words—an achievement requiring both powerful wordcraft and thorough research. We are thrilled to see the growing passion this competition inspires, with each year’s entries raising the bar even higher.

Finalists' Magazines

The #700STEMChallenge is my proudest project, with the final exceeding all expectations of what I originally had imagined it would be. All of the judges and guest speakers gave such inspirational speeches and for that I am so grateful. It was a night that I will never forget and a competition that I hope will be continued for many years to come.
