OUR HOUSES

We have a strong sense of belonging through our House system, which connects girls across the years right from Reception to Year 13.

Sydenham & Dulwich Girls has a strong tradition of Houses and inter-house events which add another exciting layer of engagement in the wider life of the school. Our well established House system encourages pupils of all ages to mix together while taking part in inter-house activities and competitions which provide invaluable opportunities for taking on responsibility and teamwork, as well as vertical integration.

Every pupil is allocated to one of our four houses when entering the school: Shirreff, Gurney, Stanley and Grey, named after the founders of the school.

Our vibrant house system is integral to the life of the school with a variety of activities actively promoting leadership, creativity and collaboration and vertical integration. Older pupils often act as mentors for younger pupils and as a close community we place huge importance on trust, tolerance and respect and support for each other. There are Heads of House in Year 12 and House Leaders in the Upper School.

House events include: House Music, House Drama, Sports Day, Big Draw, House Debating, House Sports Tournaments, House Bake Off and more!

In 2024, the House crests were redesigned by the pupils. Each house is set to embody the spirit of their chosen animal moving forward. The animals and their associated values are as follows:

Grey

Stag – passionate, energetic, loyal, and intuitive.

This year, Grey has voted to support Save the Children for their fundraising events.

Gurney

Eagle – mentally and emotionally resilient, generous, and forgiving.

This year, Gurney has voted to support Cancer Research for their fundraising events.

Shirreff

Dragon – keen-sighted, powerful, brave, protective, and a guardian.

This year, Shirreff has voted to support the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) for their fundraising events.

Stanley

Lion – just, wise, bold, courageous, and determined.

This year, Stanley has voted to support War Child for their fundraising events.

“Pupils have a sense of fun, warmth and zest for life whilst remaining courteous, polite and living by the school values.”
