Year 11 explore Zoology & Physics at University of Cambridge

Year 11 pupils visited the University of Cambridge for an amazing day exploring Zoology and Physics.

The day started with a fascinating talk from the Conservation Biologist, James Stevens, at the Museum of Zoology, where pupils learned about the challenges of the wildlife trade.

After exploring the Zoology museum and popping into Peterhouse college we headed to the Physics department for their Physics at Work exhibition and workshops.

Here’s what some of our girls had to say about the day:

I really enjoyed this trip and am grateful for the opportunity to learn further about Physics in an interesting and engaging way! I personally enjoyed our first workshop about superconductivity, which surprised me because I didn’t think I’d enjoy it as much as I did. Thank you for inviting me on this trip, the Cambridge Museum of Zoology and the range of talks were truly inspiring, and I’ll definitely be considering these pathways in the future.

I thoroughly enjoyed this trip; from the range of information I have gained from the wildlife trade talk, plus talks from researchers from Cambridge, to the Museum of Zoology. Most particularly I have gained vast knowledge on many different topics presented from the speakers. My favourite one was superconductivity, it was explained in a way we were able to understand, but also learn new things. Overall this trip was a fascinating and an amazing experience!

I thoroughly enjoyed the trip to Cambridge. The talk at the Museum of Zoology was insightful. I was especially interested in the useful methods that organisations, like TRAFFIC, use to try and dissuade the use of illegally traded species. I found the walk around the museum fascinating and shocking (although the gift shop was shockingly expensive). I couldn’t help but take 1000 pictures of the extinct animals and how they have evolved. In the university, I was surprised by how exciting the speakers were able to make physics concepts. A favourite of mine was the talk on superconductivity and the use of liquid nitrogen. Overall, I really enjoyed the trip and would recommend a similar experience to anyone remotely in STEM.
