Year 9 bring History to life in Normandy

Year 9 historians bring their studies to life in Normandy, exploring WWII historical sites and enjoying French culture.

As part of Curioso Week, Year 9 pupils traveled to northern France for a three-day exploration in Normandy. The journey served as both the perfect culmination of their hard work in studying World War II and a celebration of the transition into their GCSE years.

The trip was jam-packed with fascinating historical sights, poignant moments of reflection, and plenty of opportunities to enjoy French culture. The girls immersed themselves straight away in the extraordinary stories of the 1944 Allied landings. A visit to the landing museum was followed by a coastal walk, complete with an ice cream on the beach.

Pupils also experienced an incredibly moving 360-degree film at the circular cinema in Arromanches, which uses archival footage to envelop the viewer in the intensity of the battle. This cinematic tribute set a reflective tone for their visits to major D-Day sites, including Omaha Beach. At the Caen Mémorial museum, the girls explored the broader, complex history of World War II. The museum’s exhibitions recaptured the era, covering everything from propaganda and origins of the conflict to the Holocaust.

More than just a History trip, this journey brought their studies to life. Standing on the historic beaches of Normandy gave our pupils a profound understanding and appreciation of the lived experiences, beyond their textbooks.
