A Level Mathematicians visit Cambridge

Further Maths A Level students visited Murray Edwards College for a maths immersion day.

Accompanied by over 90 other GDST students, our Year 12 Further Mathematicians immersed themselves in Cambridge University maths as part of a Choose Maths partnership with the GDST and Murray Edwards College. The day was an amazing opportunity for our girls to be inspired and excited about advanced degrees and careers in mathematics.

The keynote speaker was Yara Kyrychenko, who recently won a Woman of the Future award for her work in AI. Yara has a double major in Mathematics and Psychology from New York University, and is a Gates scholar, studying for a PhD at Cambridge at the Cambridge Social Decision-Making Lab. She combines psychological theory with computer science methods to investigate the dangers and opportunities of AI and gave students fascinating insight into the latest research in her field, as well as an understanding of how her love of Maths and Psychology come together in her work.

The students also participated in workshops on Game Theory and Optimisation as well as having a taste of a Cambridge University Maths lecture with Professor Holly Krieger, Professor of Mathematics at the Department of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics (DPMMS) and a fellow of Murray Edwards College.
