On 5 November, it wasn’t bonfire night that created sparks but GDST girls! We were proud to host the inaugural Mock Trial competition, a pilot event that saw six schools and approximately 80 enthusiastic students converge at the Trust Office for a day of compelling legal drama and outstanding debate.
Following previous success in Mock Trial style competitions, we were delighted to host and offer students aged 15-18 a truly unique and immersive dive into the intricacies of the criminal justice system. The energy and intellect on display were palpable as the competitors stepped into mocked-up courtrooms to prosecute and defend specially written cases.
A Glimpse into the Law
The competition saw students transform into key figures of the courtroom – barristers, witnesses, and court staff – all vying to present the most persuasive case. More than just a competition, the Mock Trial served as a powerful educational platform, allowing participants to hone their public speaking, critical thinking, and teamwork abilities. Crucially, this invaluable firsthand experience of the law was conducted under the sharp guidance and judgment of real legal professionals, who were unanimous in their praise for the high standard of performance.
“The standard of debate and performance from the students was outstanding,” remarked one of the judging legal professionals. “They displayed a grasp of legal argument and courtroom etiquette far beyond their years.”
The Competing Schools
The event brought together a formidable line-up of talent from across the GDST network:
Sydenham, Streatham and Clapham, Redmaids, Norwich, Sheffield and Newcastle High School
A Nail-Biting Finish
The competition was fiercely contested, culminating in a thrilling final that had spectators on the edge of their seats. The excitement was particularly high for the host school, as Sydenham High missed out on a place in the final by the narrowest of margins—just 1 point! The team can be justly proud of their fantastic and much-praised performance throughout the day.
The grand final saw a tense face-off between Sheffield and Norwich. In a very close and highly skilful trial, it was Sheffield High School who emerged victorious, overcoming Norwich High to become the well-deserved inaugural champions. A huge congratulations to them!
The pilot event was an undeniable success, setting a phenomenal benchmark for future competitions. We look forward with great anticipation to hosting a rematch next year, where Sydenham High will surely be out to claim the trophy!
