Syd Sports Report: Spring 2 half term round up

From the grit of the trails and the thrill of the cycling track to the tactical displays on the pitch, our athletes have shown incredible dedication this half term.

Elite Individual Success: Running and Cycling

Our athletes have been making waves far beyond the school gates this term, proving their mettle against the best talent in London.

Following their standout success at the Lewisham Borough Championships, ten elite runners were selected to represent the borough at the Year 7 & 8 London Schools’ Cross Country Championships. Taking to the 2.5km course at Avery Hill, our Year 7 runners faced a deceptively flat terrain that hid long, steady inclines. Using a disciplined approach, they maintained a fast, sustainable pace that yielded exceptional results. Sophia A secured a fantastic 8th place finish, with Signey following closely in 12th.

Our Year 8 squad showed great tactical maturity, scouting the “tricky sections” of the course while watching the younger races. This preparation paid off as Charlotte finished 8th and Ava took 12th in a highly competitive field. Collectively, the efforts of Sophia, Signey, Sophia L, Bea, Eva, Leggy, Ava, Momo, Charlotte, and Freya propelled Lewisham to a remarkable 2nd place overall finish across both categories.

On the track, the success continued at the Herne Hill Inter-Schools Track Cycling Competition. In a massive field of over 170 riders, Holly (Year 13) and Maggie (Year 8) both reached the podium. Holly’s team secured an incredible 2nd place in the U18 category, while Maggie’s team earned 3rd in the U14s—a truly elite achievement for both girls.

Football

It has been a golden run for our footballers, characterized by dominant performances at both ends of the pitch. Our U13 A & B teams took on JAGS in a double-header that showcased our depth. In the A team match, a closely fought contest was decided by the clinical boots of Imo and Sama, securing a 2-0 win. Meanwhile, the B team were unstoppable, displaying a dominant performance to come away 5-1 winners with goals from Coletto and a brace from Scountjos. The U13As also traveled to the GDST Rally, where they played with conviction all day, creating great chances and defending stubbornly to finish a very respectable 8th out of 20 schools.

Our U12 squads also faced fierce fixtures against JAGS. The A team match was a fast, end-to-end affair with chances for both sides throughout; after a tense 1-1 draw, the result felt like a fair representation of the high-quality play. The B team, however, left no room for doubt. They started strongly and were clinical in front of goal, going into the break 2-0 up before keeping JAGS at bay and extending their lead to a fabulous 3-0 win. Finally, our U13 A-C teams enjoyed a successful block against Bromley High; with two draws and a win, our girls came away victorious overall after some truly great football.

Year 4 & 5 Football Festival

We were delighted to welcome 40 Year 4 and 5 students to our sports field for a vibrant Football Festival. Under bright skies, the girls’ spirits were high as they rotated through three specialized workshops focused on Passing, Dribbling, and Attacking play.

The afternoon culminated in a tournament where the level of talent on display was fantastic. Matches showed great competition between teams, individual skills, and goals all round! A huge congratulations to The Belham, whose Year 4 team emerged victorious in the tournament. We are already looking forward to welcoming everyone back for the Cricket Festival in June!

Netball

Our netballers have demonstrated incredible growth this term, culminating in some truly “edge-of-your-seat” matches and championship silverware.

U12 County Quarter Finalists

Our U12 A netball squad delivered a great performance in skill and spirit at the Kent Rally. Facing a notoriously high standard of competition, the girls ensured their season concluded on an absolute high with a day of brilliant netball.

The morning rounds set a good tone as we faced off against Weald of Kent, Fort Pitt, and Simon Langton. The squad emerged from the morning unbeaten, securing two wins and a hard-fought draw. It was particularly impressive to see the girls playing as such a cohesive unit; they implemented centre-pass plays and managed a high-press defence that left their opponents with little room to breathe – applying so much of what had been practised at training.

That momentum carried into the afternoon. Placed in a challenging group based on their morning performance, the team rose to the occasion. They beat Walthamstow Hall and Rainham Mark in quick succession before clinching a victory against Tunbridge Wells Girls’ Grammar. Having navigated the entire day without a single loss, they squad headed into the quarter-finals brimming with well-earned confidence.

The quarter-final against Invicta Grammar proved to be a true test of nerves. With adrenaline peaking, the girls found themselves trailing 4-1 at half time. However, a reset saw them regain their composure and fight back to force a 6-6 draw at the final whistle. This led to the drama of a Golden Goal period. Despite a valiant defensive effort, Invicta made the most of their starting centre pass to finish with a 7-6 win, bringing our tournament run to an end.

Every player should be immensely proud of their efforts. Their spectacular performance at the Rally was the perfect reflection of the hard work they have put in all season.

U12 Success at Colfe’s

All four U12 teams travelled to Colfe’s for an afternoon of exciting competition. The U12A team won 18-10, led by the shooting consistency of Player of the Match Georgia, the defensive dominance of Imona, and Sophia’s fluid movement down the court. The U12B team showed immense grit in a defensive battle, securing a 6-5 win, with Maisie showing great range in her shooting and Alex providing key interceptions. While the C and D teams faced tough results, the individual performances were standout; Tabitha was relentless in her defensive pressure, while Eva and Charlotte were recognized for their consistent passing and excellent communication.

The Condover Hall Weekend (Year 8)

Our Year 8 athletes enjoyed a legendary weekend away at Condover Hall, balancing outdoor activities with elite netball. The U13B team was in flying form, recording a dominant 10-0 win vs. Norwich, an 8-1 win vs. Nottingham, and a 6-2 win vs. Portsmouth, qualifying them for the elite Cup round.

The U13A team moved the ball fluently all weekend, entering Sunday’s Plate tournament with determination. They played with heart, securing vital wins against Newcastle (2-1) and Sutton (4-1). When the final points were tallied, we were thrilled to announce that the U13A team finished the weekend as Plate Winners!

Senior Squads and Progress

The U14B team delivered a masterclass against JAGS, with Ella M pivotal in turning over the ball as the team pulled away for a 16-6 win. Our U16s have also been in top form; the A team displayed a commanding performance against Sacred Heart with a 13-6 win, while the B team has been bolstered by several new players, aligning perfectly with our goal of lifelong involvement in sport.

Hockey

The U16 Hockey team took on Kingsdale School in two highly competitive matches. Amelia H made a brilliant return to goal, making key saves that allowed the team to win 2-1 on Monday. On Tuesday, the standard of play rose even higher, with Matilda (Year 9) instrumental in orchestrating chances that led to a 3-0 victory.

In the Sisters n Sport competition, our U15s faced a very strong Ibstock side. Despite the scoreline, the girls never stopped fighting, with Matilda and Elsa putting in consistent, positive performances throughout the match. Our U12 A-C teams also showed fabulous progress during their matches at JAGS; with Imona and Jemima keeping their teams in the game with several outstanding saves, they were unfortunate not to come away as winners.

As this season comes to a close, we want to thank all the girls for their brilliant attitude and determination and the parents for your unwavering support. Whether it was the tactical scouting at the Cross Country or the “gelled” attacking play of the U13 netball circle, the progress this term has been nothing short of inspiring. As we move to the summer sports we are excited to see what the Athletics, Cricket and Tennis competitions will bring.
