Musical Mastery and House Spirit at House Music 2026

From Hamilton to Elgar, the girls showed a wide breadth of talent and community spirit in this years' House Music Competition

Gurney takes the winning spot

We were privileged to special guest Liam Connery, composer and producer from South London, as our guest adjudicator. He was, as we all were, blown away by the calibre of the performances. But above all, the sense of fun and community support that radiated through the Longton Hall made the afternoon truly unforgettable and a perfect way to wrap up a fantastic Spring term.

Each house shared a solo performance, a small ensemble and a large ensemble, allowing full creativity within these parameters.

Grey
Grey showcased incredible versatility and leadership. Opening the show with Elin R’s piano solo, pupils followed this with a joyful performance of ABBA’s Super Trouper. In a fantastic display of house spirit, Year 13 students stepped in at the last minute with a high energy rendition of Dave’s Funky Friday.

Gurney
Gurney delivered a series of breathtaking performances, starting with soloist Lydia Y, whose rendition of Nina Simone’s Feeling Good, left the audience stunned. After a delicate cello and piano duet by Noa M-M and Charlotte M, Gurney’s large ensemble brought the house down with Fleetwood Mac’s Dreams. The stage was packed with talent, featuring a full band and special appearances from Mrs Buckler, Mr Hurst, Mrs Calvert, and Mr Seddon.

Shirreff
Shirreff brought soul and sophistication to the stage, led by Isabelle H’s emotive cello solo. The small ensemble performed a vibrant version of Coldplay’s Viva la Vida, while the large ensemble’s rendition of Alicia Keys’ If I Ain’t Got You featured beautiful piano and drum accompaniment, alongside a special guest appearance by Miss Blair.

Stanley
Stanley demonstrated immense ambition, featuring the day’s youngest soloist, Adaora A (Year 7), who performed brilliantly on the violin. The small ensemble moved the crowd with Dear Theodosia from Hamilton, followed by a lively, multi-instrumental performance of Vance Joy’s Riptide, supported by Miss Herdman and Mr Griffith.

The competition was incredibly tight, but after much deliberation from Liam Connery, the results were announced:

1st Place – Gurney
2nd Place – Stanley
Joint 3rd Place – Grey and Shirreff

Congratulations to all our performers for a spectacular display of creativity and courage! And a special thank you to Mrs O’Neill, the Music Department, and our Tech Team.
