Languages, Careers, and Lifelong Skills
Caroline Russell, Product Management Leader at Amazon.com, shared her inspiring journey and how languages shape resilience, communication, and lifelong skills. The talk was introduced by Ms Stoney, Head of Careers and Futures, and Madam Parker, Head of Modern Languages.
We had the honour of welcoming Caroline Russell, Product Management Leader at Amazon.com, to speak to our pupils about how studying languages can open up a world of opportunities.
Caroline shared her own journey, beginning with A levels in French, Biology, and Classical Civilisation, before going on to study French and Russian at university — despite never having studied Russian beforehand. Her studies took her abroad to both Russia and France, experiences that broadened her horizons and shaped her future career.
After university, Caroline worked in publishing and then at Lego in marketing, before joining Amazon where she has worked for over 13 years, moving from account management into product management. While she doesn’t use her languages directly in her current role at an American company, she emphasised how invaluable they have been in developing transferable skills.
She highlighted how languages nurture a growth mindset: learning a language can be challenging at first, but persistence builds confidence, resilience, and the ability to do hard things. These qualities have been essential in navigating Amazon’s fast-paced and demanding environment.
Caroline also spoke about the broader skills that languages cultivate:
- Communication and listening skills – vital for building strong relationships.
- Verbal reasoning – a key skill for tests and problem solving.
- Empathy and patience – gained through understanding others and practising consistently.
- Discipline – like music or sport, languages require daily commitment and long-term focus.
Her message to pupils was clear: the best time to learn a language is at school, where you have the time and support to immerse yourself fully. The skills and mindset developed through languages will stay with you for life, enriching both your career and personal growth.
