Exploring gratitude through kindness

Pupils and staff explored practical ways to practise gratitude and give back to the community.

A Culture of Kindness

Led by Dr Waites, our assembly for World Gratitude Day encouraged pupils to express gratitude through simple acts, journaling, volunteering, and mindfulness. Visitors and pupils shared their own gratitude messages, highlighting the joy of giving and the importance of a Culture of Kindness at Sydenham High.

This week, our assembly celebrated World Gratitude Day. Led by Dr Waites, our Deputy Head Pastoral, we reflected on the importance of gratitude and how even a simple act of kindness can have a far-reaching impact.

“Thankfulness is the beginning of gratitude. Gratitude is the completion of thankfulness. Thankfulness may consist merely of words. Gratitude is shown in acts.” – Henri Frederic Amiel

Dr Waites shared practical ways to practise gratitude:

  • Say thank you to the bus driver or people around you
  • Keep a gratitude journal to remind yourself of the good things in life
  • Make a gratitude jar of things you are thankful for
  • Appreciate your food, clothes, and the opportunity for education
  • Practice gratitude meditation or mindfulness exercises
  • Volunteer or give back to the community
  • Go on walks and enjoy the beauty of nature

As a school community, we are committed to serving both our immediate and wider communities, from supporting the food bank and participating in Crisis at Christmas to other charity initiatives led by our Houses. Serving one another is a meaningful way to express gratitude.

We also enjoyed seeing gratitude messages from our pupils and from guests who visited us during our Open Day — a wonderful reminder of the joy of giving and sharing.

At Sydenham High School, a Culture of Kindness is at the heart of our values, and we are proud of it. We continue to encourage everyone in our community to practise gratitude every day, far beyond just this week of celebration.
