Celebrating Reading
A group of Year 7 pupils attended the Lewisham Book Award 2025 event at Bonus Pastor Catholic College on 2 July, along with pupils from six other Lewisham secondary schools. Each group gave a presentation on one of the six shortlisted books they had read for the award.
Following author talks by South London writers Rachel Faturoti and Nathanael Lessore, the event featured a short quiz and book signing session. The highlight of the day was the announcement of the winning book, as voted for by the pupils themselves: The King of Nothing by Nathanael Lessore.
The King of Nothing—a warm and witty read exploring themes of toxic masculinity and peer pressure—has already won the Older Readers category of the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize 2025 and the Carnegie Shadowers’ Choice Medal for Writing 2025.
Our pupils thoroughly enjoyed the experience and left feeling inspired by the power of storytelling and the chance to meet real authors. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with fellow book lovers and celebrate a shared passion for reading.
