FUTURE PATHWAYS
Our bespoke Own Your Future programme sets up our pupils for success beyond school. Never has it been more important to prepare girls to believe in their ability and use their voice.
Throughout their time in Sixth Form, students receive tailored support, regardless of the pathway they choose. The aim is to empower them to apply to some of the best universities in the world, drawing on a tradition of preparing students for both UK and overseas institutions, as well as for Drama and Art Foundation courses. In addition, students interested in apprenticeships receive support through each stage of the application process. Careers guidance is an integral part of the PSHE and The Elevate Curriculum (including our established Power Skills Programme), complemented by dedicated university preparation sessions.
Preparing for Competitive Applications
With increasing competition for places at prestigious institutions like Cambridge and Oxford, as well as in Medicine, Veterinary Science, and Law, rigorous interview processes and stringent entrance tests have become the norm. The school is committed to preparing students thoroughly for these challenges, offering interview practice with former Oxbridge graduates and medics, alongside additional test preparation support. University and Careers events further guide decision-making, and in Year 12, students benefit from dedicated University Preparation Days that focus on UCAS, personal statements, and university choices. They are actively encouraged to attend university open days and taster courses to ensure informed decisions.
Enriching Experiences and Resources
As a GDST Sixth Form, Sydenham & Dulwich Girls offers students fantastic experiences like the GDST LEAD, Thriving Minds and other conferences. The GDST also organise various preparation events including an Oxbridge conference at the end of Year 12 which many of our students attend in order to gain a greater depth and understanding of what the application process entails.
Students can apply for a number of GDST scholarships and prizes targeted at Sixth Formers across the Trust, such as the Minerva Prize for all round achievement, or the Johnston Memorial Scholarship for those intending to study law at university.
Networking and Mentoring Opportunities
Industry networking and mentoring is a core part of our preparation for sixth formers. Alongside the annual Futures Fair and Explore Your Future breakfast talks, students are taught practical skills such as interviewing, writing a CV, and creating a LinkedIn profile to ensure they’re prepared for the world of work. The GDST also provides invaluable support, offering work experience opportunities, whilst the GDST network of over 70,000 successful alumnae is the largest all-female LinkedIn networking group in the UK. With access to contacts, mentoring, job opportunities, and events, students heading into a competitive job market gain an invaluable advantage in finding a truly fulfilling career path.
