Beyond the Grades: Sydenham & Dulwich Girls Elevates Learning with a Future-Focused Curriculum
The modern world is demanding more from our school leavers than ever before. While the pursuit of excellent GCSE and A Level examination results remains vital, it’s becoming increasingly clear that a broad, robust set of skills is the true currency of success. Parents, students, and employers alike have identified a crucial need: young people must leave education armed with financial capability, confident oracy, and essential digital literacy.
With research from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) noting the impact of AI on professions, and analysts predicting a reduction in graduate jobs across 12 of 15 key industries and business sectors in the next 12 months, never has it been more important to ensure that our girls are equipped with the key skills to set them apart from the competition.
Many schools have responded with enrichment programmes and after-school workshops. But at Sydenham & Dulwich Girls, we’ve gone further, embedding these critical skills into the very heart of the academic day with the launch of our pioneering Elevate Curriculum.
Elevating Skills from ‘Add-On’ to ‘Essential’
A major part of Sydenham & Dulwich Girls’ response has been to develop a skills-centric approach, the Elevate Curriculum, in which students in Key Stage 4 and 5 have a timetabled series of courses on future skills, alongside GCSE and A Level lessons. What makes this approach both different and highly effective is that this is an integral part of the academic curriculum, not an add-on. This isn’t just an extra club; it’s a core component of our girls’ education.
In small, focused groups, teachers act as coaches, guiding students to deliver tangible products that showcase each new skill. The proof of learning is practical and powerful,
Crucially, tangible achievements can be used as evidence in CVs, applications and interviews, giving students a real-world edge.
Fast-Paced, Real-World Ready
Key to the success of the Elevate Curriculum is its fast pace. Each course is intensively delivered within a single half-term, demanding active student participation and a goal that is always in sight.
These sessions are intentionally designed to feel different from normal lessons. Students are encouraged to embrace collaboration and risk-taking – essential workplace attributes. They can master a skill over several sessions and demonstrate this skill in front of their peers by the end of the course.
The experience is made even more authentic by the inclusion of industry experts in two of the courses, who are on hand to give invaluable advice. Students are challenged to think on their feet and grasp concepts quickly, perfectly reflecting the demanding, fast-moving experience of the modern workplace.
Measurable Progress, Celebrated Success
The Elevate Curriculum ensures students’ progress is measurable and evidenced. At the end of each course, teachers evaluate students’ engagement and the quality of what they have delivered—whether it’s the strength of their arguments in a debate or their performance in a problem-solving challenge.
Once students have progressed through the series of courses, there is a celebration of achievement in the summer term for the wider school community and parents. And for top performers, the learning doesn’t stop there. A ‘next step’ option allows high-achieving students to progress to national competitions, taking their new skills to an even bigger stage.
