At Sydenham & Dulwich Girls, our ‘girls-first’ philosophy is the heartbeat of everything we do. We know, and the data proves, that an environment tailored specifically to how girls learn builds a unique brand of confidence, academic risk-taking, and leadership.
However, a common question I encounter from parents and prospective families is: “How do you prepare them for a coeducational world?” My answer is always the same: We don’t just prepare them for it: we give them the best of both worlds. Through our strategic partnerships with Dulwich Prep & Senior and Dulwich College, we offer a ‘hybrid’ model that preserves the unlimited opportunity of an ambitious girls’ school, while adding the social and intellectual agility of coeducational collaboration.
The Learning Journey: From Forest School to Final Exams
In using a version of educational theory, the ‘Diamond Model’, our girls benefit from being taught separately for the majority of their schooling, but come together for social and academic enrichment as part of our bespoke partnership programme that evolves as our students grow.
Learning Without Borders from the Early Years
Our youngest learners begin their collaborative journey in the great outdoors. Through our Forest School sessions with Dulwich Prep & Senior, our girls engage with boys in play-based, child-led learning in a natural environment.
The Insight: Scholarly research on outdoor education suggests that coeducational play in natural settings helps dismantle gendered play-patterns early on. In the woods, there are no ‘boys’ toys’ or ‘girls’ games’—there is only problem-solving, mud-kitchen teamwork, and shared discovery. This builds a foundation of mutual respect before social stereotypes have a chance to take root.
Strengthening Voices throughout Junior
As our pupils move through the Junior School, the focus shifts toward intellectual exchange, such as our collaborations with Dulwich College Junior School (DCJS), particularly in Debating, Art, Philosophy and STEM.
The Insight: Academic studies on ‘communicative competence’ show that girls often excel in verbal reasoning. By debating with peers from Dulwich College, our girls learn to articulate their arguments with precision and poise. They discover that their voices carry weight and that they can hold their own in any intellectual arena.
While Sydenham & Dulwich Girls is a powerhouse for girls in STEM, these joint workshops allow our girls to lead in technical fields alongside boys, dismantling the “male-dominated” stereotype of science and maths, fostering a culture of “collaborative intelligence” where the best idea wins, regardless of gender.
Deepening collaboration: The “One Voice” Partnership
In Year 8, our pupils join forces with Dulwich Prep & Senior for our ‘One Voice’ initiative. This isn’t just a social gathering: it is a structured academic challenge. Students work in mixed teams to tackle complex themes like community, identity and social responsibility, collaborating on research and critical thinking to produce together a TEDx-style presentation.
The Insight: Research from the Girls’ Day School Trust (GDST) shows that girls are more likely to lead in these mixed settings when they have already established their ‘voice’ in a single-sex classroom. By collaborating on high-stakes presentations, our Year 8s learn to negotiate, listen, and lead alongside their male peers.
Mastery: The Advanced Electives Series
As our students enter the Sixth Form, the stakes get higher. Our partnership with Dulwich College offers the Advanced Electives Series. These are university-style seminars covering everything from Anatomical Studies to Architectural History. In addition, our Sixth Formers have the opportunity to become mentors at the Dulwich College Saturday School science sessions for local Year 5 pupils.
The Insight: The Advanced Electives mimic the undergraduate experience. Building on the confidence developed in a single-sex environment where gender stereotypes have no place, our girls are equipped to hold their own in any situation, be that scientific exploration in a lab or debating niche academic topics with students from Dulwich College, our Sixth Formers develop the intellectual agility required for higher education and the workplace. They learn that their perspective is not just valid but vital in an integrated intellectual arena.
Why This Works: The ‘Best of Both Worlds’
GDST research shows that “There is strong evidence that girls-only education leads to higher academic achievement, greater diversity of subject choice, stronger self-confidence and resilience, and enhanced career progression”; however, additional scholarly research, including meta-analyses by Pahlke et al., suggests that while academic outcomes are high in single-sex schools, the social-emotional benefits are maximised when schools provide controlled co-educational opportunities.
The benefits for our girls are threefold:
- Breaking Stereotypes: In our classrooms, every physicist, footballer, and head of school is a girl. When they meet their peers from Dulwich College or Dulwich Prep & Senior, they do so as equals with a proven track record of capability.
- Social Intelligence: Collaborative projects reduce ‘gender othering’. Our girls see their male counterparts as partners in inquiry, not as distractions.
- Future-Proofing: Whether it’s a joint musical production or a STEM workshop, these interactions build the power skills (collaboration, conflict resolution, and public speaking) that are essential for the 21st-century workforce.
