ALUMNA SPOTLIGHT
Kyah Marshall – Class of 2023
“I was fully supported with each stage of applying to University, through the Oxbridge & MDV Programme. Now I’m a medical student and absolutely loving it!”
Kyah Marshall’s journey from Sydenham High School to Brighton and Sussex Medical School is a testament to the transformative power of education and opportunity. As a bursary beneficiary, Kyah’s path exemplifies resilience, determination, and a commitment to making a difference in the world.
Starting at Sydenham High in Year 7, Kyah found herself as the sole representative from her previous school. Despite this initial challenge, she embraced the opportunity to forge new connections and thrive in a supportive environment. Sydenham High became more than just a school to Kyah; it was a place where doors were opened, and skills were honed.
Throughout her time at Sydenham, Kyah seized every opportunity available to her. From participating in the Socrates Programme to engaging in sports clubs, competitions, and music lessons, she immersed herself in both academic and extracurricular pursuits. This holistic approach to education not only allowed Kyah to excel academically but also to develop crucial skills in leadership, communication, and teamwork.
The support provided by the bursary enabled Kyah to remain at Sydenham until the end of Year 13, where she took on the role of Head Girl and played a pivotal role in organising events like Crisis. Additionally, the school’s guidance and assistance during the university application process, including personal statement workshops and the Oxbridge Programme, paved the way for Kyah’s acceptance into Brighton and Sussex Medical School.
Now, as a student at medical school, Kyah is passionate about her chosen path to become a consultant psychiatrist, specialising in child and adolescent mental health. Her ambition extends beyond personal success; she aspires to inspire young people, particularly girls and individuals from underrepresented backgrounds, to pursue their dreams and seize every opportunity available to them.
For Kyah, the message is clear: Just go for it; ‘what ifs’ aren’t worth it. Her journey serves as a beacon of hope and encouragement for anyone facing obstacles or doubting their potential. Through hard work, perseverance, and a belief in oneself, Kyah Marshall exemplifies the spirit of determination and the limitless possibilities that lie ahead.
